I became an EMT in 1987 and graduated from Daniel Freeman Paramedic School (now UCLA) in June, 1989.
For most of the next decade I worked in the City of Glendale, CA, responding to 911 calls with the, then BLS only, fire department.
By the end of 1998, I was traveling around the country working with distressed EMS agencies. I taught organizations to improve field provider performance through better communications & leadership practices. I provided tools that bridged common gaps and offered real ownership in the agency’s reputation for quality of service and care to anyone who was willing to accept it—and a way out for those who did not.
At the turn of the century I took over as the Director of Operations for the largest ambulance provider in the State of Maryland.
Now, back in Los Angeles, I have earned my Law Degree and passed the California Bar Exam. As a Defense Attorney, I am looking to the future of EMS.
It is through intensive study of the Law that I have discovered a significant disparity that exists between the technical law EMS Providers learn in school and the issues & exposures they face in real life. I created this website, THE LEGAL GUARDIAN™ newsletter, and a SERIES OF INFORMATIVE AND INTERACTIVE CE LECTURES to help bridge that vital gap.
The Origin of TLG
It seems that EMT and Paramedic positions are viewed more as jobs than professions; as stepping-stones rather than careers. Given the intense nature and life-giving impact of these endeavors, that logic seems counterintuitive.
Field providers should take tremendous pride in the work they do and society should recognize that it is they who are the unsung - and selflessly anonymous - heroes who keep families together.
My goal, and the goal of TLG, is to contribute to that future in the best way I know how. Defense of Providers and Education.
As we grow, the content of this website, The Legal Guardian Newsletter, and the series of education programs we have created will serve to contribute to the continuous improvement of EMS in all of its incarnations.
The development of The Legal Guardian will be calculated and careful, the information may not only save lives, but possibly careers. I hope to keep the information fresh and informative. I invite submissions and ideas from every corner of EMS. In the end, The Legal Guardian was created to protect you.
