Social Media outlets like Facebook, Twitter, and YouTube have made a big world very, very small. For EMS providers, that world is even smaller. Unfortunately, social media has grown much faster than EMS’ ability to manage it. Photographs, videos, and all types of commentary have opened a Pandora’s Box of legal and ethical problems. In this important session, we look closely at social media and its broad-reaching impact of EMS. We will gather ideas for how to manage and make great use of these new and valuable tools.

There is a big difference between what we see and what we “think” we see. For EMS providers, that difference can be career-ending. In this fun and enlightening session, you will learn to look at the world through two different lenses: the one that is real and the one that looks real. We will share real-life examples of how “context” – or the lack thereof – makes all the difference in the world and how you can protect yourself from the dangers of misperception.

“The Class A-Medic”

There are only three types of providers: the natural, the striver, and the slacker. This tough, but very necessary, program takes an in-depth look at each of these provider types and challenges participants to identify the one that best describes them. This program combines law, ethics, and self-reflection. Using the laws of EMS as a guide, we will discuss those differences in contrast with the ethics of EMS and how recognizing them is a call to action to improve the delivery of EMS across the nation, one provider at a time.

What I Do… and Why

Since becoming a Paramedic in 1989 and after becoming an Attorney, I have discovered a vast disparity between the Law that is generally taught in EMT or Paramedic school and the actual legal risks and liabilities EMS Professionals face from day to day. The world has become a very dangerous place for EMS providers and I hope to be the bulletproof vest.

In response, I have created a comprehensive and interactive series of lectures for experienced and future EMS Professionals that address the “New Legal Reality” that frontline field providers face on a daily basis.

Historically, training programs call on a field provider with little or no legal experience or an attorney with no EMS experience to teach legal issues to an audience unready to receive it. The forced and typically unenthusiastic presentation leads to boredom and very little retained learning.

My programs, on the other hand, draw from my own extensive Paramedic & EMS Management experience and intensive Legal Education to help providers understand their actual exposures as well as to provide tools and techniques for mitigating them – in a language they understand and using terms & examples to which they can easily relate.

The presentations are lively and engaging and invite (but does not require) audience participation.
